The chestnut tree

It is a plant native to the Mediterranean area, widespread in Italy in the Alps and Apennines between 300 and 1000 metres, and is one of the main features of pure (chestnut) or mixed deciduous forests.

The development of the chestnut tree is initially very slow and reaches its vegetative splendour at around 50 years of age. It has a very long life span, in fact it can live to be over a thousand years old.

The chestnut tree stands with a large stem and then displays a dense crown.
